Sustainable Scoops, GELATOn the ROAD Local Flavour Competition
June 14
On the 14th of June, 2024, the Urban Diversity Education Campus PH Wien, in partnership with the European Training and Research Institute (ETRI), hosted the Sustainable Scoops, GELATOn the ROAD Local Flavour Competition in Vienna. Thisevent was a highlight of the summer festival, showcasing innovative, sustainable, and regional gelato creations.
The competition was the result of a collaborative effort involving students from the University of Teacher Education, I, Nutrition study program, and the expertise of the Gelato Academy’s Wolfgang Steininger and Benjamin Munz. The gelato production took place at the state-of-the-art Gelato Competence Center of Stoelner Gastrotechnik in St. Pölten, Lower Austria. This facility provided an excellent environment where traditional recipes were balanced with modern technology, resulting in exceptional gelato creations that adhered to the highest production and hygiene standards.
The event featured four new, sustainable gelato flavors: Pumpkin Seed Oil, Poppy Seed, Rhubarb, and Chocolate with Apricot. These flavors were crafted using regional ingredients, highlighting the event’s commitment to sustainability and local sourcing. The gelato display was further enhanced by the contribution of A.G.I.A. President Silvio Molin-Pradel and the Eissalon am Schwedenplatz with Manifattura del Gelato, who provided a professional gelato display case. This ensured the gelato’s optimal presentation and freshness, maintaining a constant temperature to preserve quality.
The summer festival attendees had the opportunity to taste these distinctive flavors and vote for their favorite. The results of the competition, with a total of 533 votes, were as follows:
- Pumpkin Seed Oil Gelato and Chocolate Gelato with Apricot (tied): 143 votes each
- Rhubarb Gelato: 127 votes
- Poppy Seed Gelato: 120 votes
This event not only showcased the talents and creativity of the students but also provided them with valuable practical experience in a real production environment. The successful execution of the Sustainable Scoops competition met the objectives of the EU co-financed GELATOn the ROAD project, part of the Urban Diversity Education Campus PH Wien’s summer festival 2024, in collaboration with ETRI.
The Sustainable Scoops event was a celebration of local flavors, sustainable practices, and educational collaboration, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
